Savoring the Symphony: When Finest Cheeses Meet Exceptional Wines
BRA – Cheese 2023, the grand showcase of cheese under the banner of Slow Food, has once again brought to life the streets of Bra, in the province of Cuneo (Italy). This festival showcased the crème de la crème of both Italian and international cheese production. An absolute must for all enthusiasts, Cheese 2023 not only provided a window into the world of delectable dairy products but also the tales of the “small guardians of permanent meadows.”
While cheese in all its glory was, undeniably, the hero of the event, there was another equally charismatic protagonist: wine. For those, like me, who take a keen interest in wine, Cheese 2023 was a real treat.
The success of this year’s edition surpassed that of 2019, evident not only from the sheer number of exhibitors but also the overwhelming turnout from the very first day. The meticulously planned itinerary, boasting over 300 events, was a testimony to the collective efforts of the regional institutions that brought their rich traditions and flavors.
As streets buzzed with cheese connoisseurs, the arcades of Via Garibaldi bore witness to wine enthusiasts flocking to the Enoteca, which showcased an impressive 400 labels handpicked by the Banca del Vino. Among these, the wines from Piemonte stood out prominently, earning accolades in the Slow Wine Guide 2023. These exquisite wines, crafted by the esteemed members of the Slow Wine Coalition, graced the palates of many. The Triple A wine selection and labels from the Consorzio di tutela del Franciacorta further accentuated the wine collection.
The FISAR sommeliers played an integral role, introducing attendees to the delightful world of cheese and wine pairing. Their expertise ensured that each cheese, be it from Italy or overseas, found its perfect wine partner from the vast selection at the Gran Sala.
Cheese 2023 was not just an ode to cheese but also a celebration of sustainable agriculture, as emphasized by the president of the Piedmont Region, Alberto Cirio. He echoed Carlin Petrini’s sentiments on the importance of mapping out the many permanent meadows of Piemonte, leading up to the Terra Madre 2024 edition – a significant international gathering that focuses on preserving ecosystems and endorsing eco-friendly agricultural practices.
As we reminisce about the flavors of Cheese 2023, the harmonious blend of cheese and wine, and the enriching sessions that spanned from Gusto Workshops to Apéro sur l’herbe, one thing is certain: The countdown to Cheese 2025 has already begun.
Mark your calendars for a gastronomic extravaganza in Bra from September 19 to 22, 2025! Cheers!
