Vermouth di Torino IGP Consortium Officially Recognized — Italy’s First Protected Aromatized Wine Joins the Ranks of National Excellence
TORINO – The Vermouth di Torino has achieved a new milestone in its remarkable renaissance. The Italian Ministry of Agriculture has officially recognized the Consorzio di Tutela Vermouth di Torino IGP, making it the first protected aromatized wine in Italy. This recognition not only consolidates the drink’s historic and cultural legacy but also positions it firmly among the country’s most prestigious agri-food products.
From 2018 to 2024, the Vermouth di Torino sector has experienced extraordinary growth. Its turnover soared from €32.6 million to €172.2 million, marking an impressive revival for one of Piedmont’s most iconic creations. Rooted in the 19th century and renowned worldwide for its craftsmanship and unique blend of botanicals, Vermouth di Torino now enjoys stronger institutional protection under the newly established consortium led by president Bruno Malavasi, elected on October 3.
“This step not only certifies the quality and historical value of this aromatized wine—the first to receive such protection—but also places it fully within Italy’s system of protected excellences,” stated Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida. “It will help strengthen its presence both in domestic and international markets.”
The Ministry emphasized that Italy’s geographical indication system, now including Vermouth di Torino, generates over €20 billion in production value and represents 16% of the nation’s agri-food exports, amounting to more than €11.8 billion. With this latest recognition, the number of officially acknowledged consortia rises to 327, a testament to the ongoing commitment of Italian producers to enhance and safeguard their regional specialties.
“Welcoming this new consortium means continuing along the path of quality protection and promotion that defines our national identity,” added Minister Lollobrigida.
The official acknowledgment of the Consorzio Vermouth di Torino IGP thus celebrates not only an economic success but also a cultural triumph — reaffirming the timeless allure of this elegant, aromatic symbol of Italian heritage.
