Reviving Ancient Techniques for a Sustainable Future in Enology

VERONA – The first-ever wine event dedicated exclusively to terracotta jars and the excellence within this niche of enology concluded with great success. Held on June 7th and 8th at the Gallerie Mercatali in Veronafiere, the event, conceived by Helmuth Köcher, the patron of Merano WineFestival, in collaboration with Vinitaly, showcased the innovative and sustainable winemaking techniques involving terracotta jars.

“Amphora Revolution was created to highlight a new trend in the wine world: the revival of an ancient technique as an innovation that many Italian and international wineries have been experimenting with over the last decade. The event aims to support and enhance amphora wine, an expression of authenticity and naturalness,” said Helmuth Köcher, The WineHunter and patron of Merano Wine Festival.

A Gathering of Excellence

Over 100 Italian wineries, along with a selection of Georgian wines, participated in this unique tasting journey, highlighting an ancient yet revolutionary winemaking technique. The use of terracotta jars is seen as a sustainable response to the pressing challenges of climate change. The event also featured scientific panels, roundtables, and masterclasses exploring the techniques, biodiversity, and secrets of amphora winemaking.

“The collaboration between Merano Wine Festival and Veronafiere-Vinitaly is based on a common action: supporting the wine sector and creating opportunities. Amphora Revolution, representing a valuable niche with a sustainable DNA, fits perfectly into Vinitaly’s new course started in 2023 and Veronafiere’s strategic plan ‘One 2024-2026.’ This three-year project includes events and development actions, also at Vinitaly,” commented Maurizio Danese, CEO of Veronafiere.

The event kicked off on Friday, June 7th, at 2:30 PM with the WH Amphora PLATINUM Award Ceremony and the launch of the new official guide, “The WineHunter Amphora Award 2024,” the first guide dedicated entirely to amphora wines.

“Amphora Revolution aims to give visibility to a sector that is attracting much attention commercially. For this first edition, we achieved our exhibition goal with 101 companies from all Italian regions, plus producers from Georgia, France, and Slovenia. This comprehensive offering makes Amphora Revolution the main B2B and B2C platform for this particular enological production,” added Raul Barbieri, Commercial Director of Veronafiere.
