Celebrating the Harmony of High Culture: Opera Meets Fine Wine in an Exquisite Partnership Between Teatro Regio di Torino and Alta Langa Consortium
TORINO – The Alta Langa Consortium has recently formed a partnership with Teatro Regio di Torino, one of the oldest, largest, and most significant opera houses in the world.
The unveiling of the 2023/2024 Season on June 7 officially marked the onset of this collaboration. The effervescence of the esteemed Alta Langa sparkling wine from Piedmont will accompany the toasts at the premieres of all operas till June 2024: La Juive (21st September), La bohème (21st October), La rondine (17th November), Don Pasquale (25th January 2024), Un ballo in maschera (21st February 2024), La fanciulla del West (22nd March 2024), Le Villi (19th April 2024), Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman, 17th May 2024), and Il trittico (21st June 2024).
Teatro Regio di Torino, with its roots dating back to 1740, is among the oldest active opera houses globally. Originally inaugurated as a magnificent representative place for the House of Savoy and designed by architect Benedetto Alfieri based on innovative criteria, it soon became a favorite destination of the grand tours of the era. After nearly two uninterrupted centuries of performances, the ancient building, an Italian-style theatre with five orders of boxes, was destroyed by a violent fire overnight between February 8 and 9 in 1936. This incident didn’t cease the programming of the Regio, which continued in other city theaters until the current complex opened.
The theatre’s unique design can be attributed to the genius of architect Carlo Mollino. Inaugurated in 1973 with Verdi’s I Vespri siciliani, directed uniquely by Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano, the new Teatro Regio is celebrating its half-century of operation this year.
On July 6, the opera I Vespri siciliani will be reprised in a gala concert form to celebrate the 50th anniversary. To commemorate this significant event, toasts will be made with Alta Langa sparkling wine, and an exclusive Alta Langa signature cocktail, named Regio 50 (Alta Langa DOCG, Vermouth di Torino Extra Dry, Grappa, Linden Honey, garnish: Verbena), will be presented.
Mathieu Jouvin, Superintendent of the Teatro Regio, commented: “In tribute to the historic inauguration of 1973, we have scheduled Giuseppe Verdi’s I Vespri siciliani, a Gala Concert with a stellar cast led by Riccardo Frizza. I am particularly pleased to inaugurate the partnership with the Alta Langa Consortium in the spirit of sharing the joy of music even more.”
“We like to think that a toast with the Alta Langa DOCG becomes part of the ritual of the Teatro Regio, a symbolic place of Turin and Piedmont where art, culture, and emotion are the absolute protagonists,” concluded Mariacristina Castelletta, president of the Alta Langa Consortium. “We are proud of this collaboration: Alta Langa DOCG is ready to steal the show – let us drink from the joyful glasses!”
